About the workshop

Low back pain affects one in three adults in the UK each year, with an estimated 2.5 million people seeking help from their GP. The new NICE guidelines recommend Yoga as part of the long-term rehabilitation for chronic low back pain. However, there is no guidance on how to work safely and effectively with these types of clients or how to practice yoga safely if you suffer from lower back pain or had back pain in the past. In most cases, low back is classified as non-specific, and can become chronic: understanding the complexity of chronic pain and how important it is to be able to step away from a mechanical approach and into a more psychological and social approach: is where Yoga is at its most powerful! Topics covered: Acute versus chronic pain : the role of central sensitisation What is non-specific low back pain How yoga can help Precautions and how to adapt asanas safely The bio psychosocial approach: pain and emotions, Mindfulness-based approaches to pain management for the lower back Relaxation positions and advice on acute back pain This workshop, led by Silvia Laurenti, is suitable for anyone suffering from low back pain or for yoga teachers wishing to learn more about using yoga therapeutically. Silvia Laurenti, is a HPC-registered Physiotherapist, qualified at the University of Brighton in 2007. She has been working extensively in the NHS and private practice. Silvia is also a qualified Yoga and Pilates teacher with a passion for teaching experiential anatomy. For the past 10 years, she has been delivering embodiment and anatomy workshops to yoga and movement teachers. She is the clinical lead for Connect Health Pain Services in the South where she integrates physiotherapy, somatic practices and yoga therapy for the management of complex chronic pain conditions. Silvia also offers training in yoga therapy for pain to yoga professionals who want to understand best practices, precautions, and how to apply various aspects of yoga successfully. We are delighted that Silvia is returning The Yoga Garden to offer a series of four workshops this year that will benefit yoga students (including complete beginners) as well as yoga professionals and bodywork therapists.
